Clare’s Sinn Fein TD says three years after a report highlighted the number of people with disabilities under the age of 65 who are living in nursing homes across the country, no progress has been made on addressing the issue.

A report from the Ombudsman this week found that there are over 1,300 people under the age of 65 in nursing homes across the country and many say they had no option but to go into care due to lack of support from the State.

The HSE says it will prepare an action plan to help implement the recommendations of this report.

Kilrush Deputy Violet Anne Wynne, who sits on the Disability Matters Oireachtas Committee, says this week’s report from the Ombudsman highlights the lack of progress that has been made for those who want to live independently.
