Clare Sinn Fein Councillor Says Tax Treatment Of Small Landlords Needs ‘To Be Looked At’

Clare’s sole Sinn Fein elected representative believes the tax treatment of small landlords needs to be re-examined by the Government.

It follows the decision to end the temporary winter eviction ban as planned on March 31st.

Coalition leaders have agreed to end the eviction ban as planned at the end of this month, though it will be on a phased basis until June.

Cabinet Ministers have had the final sign off this morning, with opposition leaders already highly critical of the move.

Plans for developing a budget package for both landlords and tenants will also be discussed, with details to come at a later date.

That could include significant tax breaks for smaller landlords, which could cost the State in the region of 800 million euro a year.

Sinn Fein’s sole elected representative in this county believes it’s a proposal that needs further examination.

Shannon-based Councillor Donna McGettigan feels smaller landlords need to be brought into line with corporate letting companies.

It’s understood a number of measures are to be looked at by the Government which they feel will enhance the protection of renters.

One of those proposed by the Green Party could be to ensure that those renting a home would get first refusal on purchasing the property if a landlord decides to sell it.

However, Ennis auctioneer Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon says more clarity is needed on that proposal.
