A Clare Senator has resigned from the Fine Gael party, a week after re-election to the Seanad.

In a statement to Clare FM, Martin Conway has said that on Tuesday, January 22nd, he was arrested by Gardaí on O’Connell Street in Dublin, for being in an intoxicated state due the consumption of sleeping tablets and alcohol.

He was detained at Store Street Garda Station and released without charge a number of hours later.

The Ennistymon-based Senator, who was first elected to the Seanad in 2011, has said this was not disclosed with the party.

“I would like to apologise unreservedly for this to my family, colleagues, supporters and my nominating body, Vision Ireland. I let myself down. I would also like to apologise to the members of An Garda Síochána for having to deal with this matter.

“I have resigned from the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party.

“I understand that a disciplinary process will now commence,” Senator Conway said.

Fine Gael says it notes Senator Martin Conway’s statement, apologies and his resignation of the party whip and that the matter is now subject to a party disciplinary process.
