Clare Senator Disappointed Trolley Numbers Soared At UHL Last Month Despite New Ambulance Pathway

A Clare government representative says it’s ‘disturbing’ that overcrowding at the region’s main hospital soared last month despite a new ambulance protocol being introduced.

As of January 9th, ambulance paramedics have been able to transfer non-urgent patients to the Medical Assessment Unit at Ennis Hospital during its opening hours in a bid to alleviate pressure on the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick.

However, the latest figures from the Irish Nurses and MidWives Organisation show that more than 1,500 patients were on trolleys at UHL in February – at least 50% more than any other hospital in the country.
