Clare's Senator believes that failing to prevent the impending Garda strike represents a failure by all parties to resolve the ongoing dispute, and not just the Government.

Martin Conway, who's the Seanad spokesman on Justice, is commenting as Senior members of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors are meeting today to discuss planned strike action on Friday.

The Executive of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors is meeting to discuss fresh proposals from the Department of Justice.

They've gathered in Dublin, hours after their colleagues in the GRA rejected a government package aimed at resolving their industrial dispute.

Speaking on her way into today's talks, AGSI President Antoinette Cunningham was asked if Friday’s strike was likely to proceed, she says it would be unfair to speculate at this point.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs says contingency plans are 'well underway', in the event that the strike goes ahead.

However, Charlie Flanagan still hopes it can be called off.

Clare's Senator has expressed disappointment that the 30 million euro Government offer wasn't put to a ballot of members, saying he doesn't believe that the majority of Gardaí want to strike.

Martin Conway, who is the Seanad's Justice Spokesman, suspects that intensive talks will continue well into the 11th hour but he doesn't believe the Government, led by his own party, is entirely to blame for the delay in resolving the dispute.
