A Clare senator has issued a clarion call for businesses housing international protection applicants to receive supports in Budget 2024.
In a recent open letter, the Clare Tourism Advisory Board claimed the repurposing of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses as emergency accommodation for international protection applicants has resulted in a 37% reduction in the number of available bed nights in the county.
As of the 1st of September, there are 4,701 displaced Ukrainians residing in county Clare, many of whom are living in temporary emergency accommodation centres in hotels and other businesses across the county.
Tulla Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley has told the Seanad that businesses have been “decimated” by the loss of tourism beds.
