Clare Senator Accuses Energy Companies Of Penalising Families By Escalating Standing Charges

A Clare senator says energy companies are penalising families who have insulated their homes by increasing standing charges.

Representatives of Electric Ireland and ESB Networks are before TDs and Senators at the Oireactas Climate Action Committee.

Electric Ireland has increased its prices for consumers three times in 2021.

But as Mountshannon-based Fianna Fail senator Timmy Dooley told David Vickers of Electric Ireland, families trying to do the right thing are being penalised:

‘On the one hand, the regulator of the government is telling everybody “reduce, insulate your home”. The net effect of your decision is working against that’.

‘You’re actually penalising people who’ve made an effort to insulate their homes and reduce the cost of electricity because you’re putting a higher standing charge on them’.
