Clare Seanad Candidate Hoping To End “Paternalistic Attitude” Around Disability

A Clare activist is hoping to end what she calls the “paternalistic attitude” around disability in Ireland through electoral politics.

Longtime disability rights advocate Ann Marie Flanagan has been nominated for the 27th Seanad by Independent Living Movement Ireland under the Administrative Panel.

If elected, the Ennistymon native would be the first disabled woman in the upper house of the Oireachtas.

She says a key priority of hers would be changing the language around people with disabilities and creating opportunities for them to integrate into society.
