Clare Rural Campaigner Expresses Concerns Of Rural Policing Following Doon Death

A prominent South East Clare rural campaigner says the death of a man who discovered his home was burgled is evidence that the closure of garda stations has left rural areas vulnerable.

62-year-old John O'Donoghue was found by his sister at the back of his house in Doon yesterday afternoon, after suffering a suspected heart attack.

It follows a spike in crime in Clare last week which saw more than a dozen homes, mainly in the South East of the county targetted by burlars.

Nine rural Garda Stations have been closed in Clare as part of cost-saving measures and Clare Chairman of the ICMSA Martin McMahon believes its left the elderly in particular unprotected.
