Plans for a major retail development on the outskirts of Ennis has been rejected by An Bord Pleanala.
Michael Lynch Ltd. was seeking to construct a 34-million euro facility, which would also consist of offices and a public library for the town at a site on the Clare Road opposite St. Flannan’s College.
The project was rejected by Ennis Town Council last year amid concerns it would negatively impact existing businesses in the town centre.
This decision was appealed by the developers but An Bord Pleanala upheld the local authority’s ruling stating the scale of the proposed project was disproportionate for the area concerned. as well as resulting in increased noise and disturbance in the area.
It was also found that the project would have been premature pending the upgrading of the Clareabbey Waste water Treatment Plant.
The decision has been warmly welcomed by Ennis Chamber of Commerce .
