Figures from the Department of the Environment show that Clare’s local authorities have written off around 5.5 million euro in commercial rates charges since 2006.

Clare County Council and Ennis Town Council have suffered the majority of the shortfall, and one member of both bodies is hopeful that it will encourage people to shop local during the festive period.

Fine Gael’s Johnny Flynn is hopeful shoppers will help businesses who support jobs and services in Clare.
