Clare’s Irish National Teacher Organisation representative believes its not the schools role to stop children getting smartphones.
It comes as Waterford is becoming the first county where every primary school will urge parents not to give their children smartphones over mounting concerns of cyberbullying and children becoming inactive by spending too much time on screens.
This Waterford initiative follows on from eight schools in Greystones in Wicklow which recently brought in a no-smartphone code.
Clare INTO representative, Brendan Horan, says although smartphones can create social issues with young children, its for parents to decide, not schools.
