A prominent former Clare publican who is stepping away from the trade after more than two decades of service says the government needs to prioritise firms struggling to keep their doors open.
Darragh McCallister ran both Considines Bar and Lucas’s Bar on Parnell Street and served as the president of the Ennis Chamber of Commerce in 2021.

Since 2005 , the number of pubs operating in Clare has fallen by 25%, while Ireland continues to pay the highest rate of excise duty on alcohol in the EU.
He says support must come from the top to ensure a vital social outlet is not lost.
