Clare Publican Claims Drastic Measures Needed To Ensure Survival Of Rural Pubs

A Clare publican says drastic measures are urgently needed to ensure the survival of pubs, particularly in rural areas.

The Vintner’s Federation of Ireland is holding its annual conference in Limerick, with proceedings set to come to an end today.

During the conference the federation is calling for the equal treatment of all publicans and for a 40% rebate on the excise charged on draught drinks.

Clare VFI Chair and Owner of O’Deas Pub in Ennis, Charlie O’Meara, says while this wouldn’t necessarily result in a decrease in the price of a pint, it would provide a lifeline for pubs in small communities.
