A Clare priest believes it was “disrespectful” of the Killaloe Diocese to put flooring over unmarked graves in the Ennis Cathedral.
Works being carried out in the Cathedral have yielded the discovery of the remains of at least four people who are believed to have been clergy members buried in the body of the church in the early twentieth century in accordance with tradition.
The cathedral’s vinyl flooring, which is currently being removed, was first put in place in 1973 despite knowledge at the time that people had been buried on the site.
Communications Officer for the Killaloe Diocese Father Brendan Quinlivan says allowing people to walk over the site of human remains is disrespectful by modern standards but may have been viewed differently at the time.
