A Clare political representative has criticised the impending speed limit reductions, labelling them as “draconian”.
From tomorrow, the speed limit on local roads in Clare will be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h, while further changes to limits on national secondary roads and in town centres are to be implemented at a later date.
174 people lost their lives on Irish roads last year and the RSA intends that these measures will reduce the rate of road fatalities throughout the rest of the year.
Aontú Local Area Representative for Ennis, Séamus Enright says the new limits are too restrictive and focus should have instead been directed to Garda recourses and enforcement of current speed limits.
