The 45th & now 47th President of the United States spoke during the bilateral meeting about his ambitions to bring multinational companies based in Ireland back to the United States.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin on his first visit to the White House, however, was quick to remind the President that foreign direct investment between Ireland and the US is a two-way street.

Trade is the focus of today’s engagements between the two leaders and Micheál Martin will attend a number of events on Capitol Hill with Irish-American industry leaders.

A potential flashpoint for discussions will be the 25% tariff President Trump has placed on all steel and aluminium imports from the EU, in an effort to secure a more favourable deal for US exporters and to bring some companies back.

For its part, the EU has announced reciprocal tariffs on 26 billion euro worth of US goods from next month.

Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Kilkishen-based Dr Chris McInerney, who’s Associate Professor in the Department of Politics at University of Limerick believes US companies will chose to remain in Ireland for the skilled workforce and access to European markets.
