It's claimed people in Clare are living in fear due to a rise in rural crime.

It comes as over a thousand people gathered in Tipperary last night to relay their fears to Senior Garda Officials.

Farmers who have been the victims of robberies were among the organisers of a massive meeting on rural crime in Tipperary last night, which drew a crowd of over 1000 people.

They called for stronger tresspass laws, electronic tagging for offenders and increased Garda resources.

Mary Morrissey, a victim of robbery, spoke at the meeting and she said her life has changed for the worst since then.

The Chairman of Clare's Joint Policing Committee says there's a similar feeling of vulnerability here.

Independent Sixmilebridge Councillor Pj Ryan is concerned about people taking the law into their own hands by attempting to protect themselves.

Councillor Ryan believes the elderly in particular are living in fear and he agrees that stronger legislation needs to be put in place to put a stop to the culture of fear in the county.
