Clare FM’s Darragh O’Grady went out and about to find out how the people in the Banner county are planning to celebrate.

Historically, Shrove Tuesday was used as a means of using up surplus eggs, butter and milk prior to Ash Wednesday.

The day has also been noted as a day of indulgence, ahead of the beginning of an extended period of abstinence during Lent.

Doris along with the rest of the O’Connor’s Bakery in Ennis, have been up since first light preparing pancakes for delivery.

She outlines what goes into making the perfect pancake.

Traditionally, pancakes would have been served with sugar and butter.

But, today there are a wide array of options available such as jam, Nutella and fruit, while lemon juice has also become a staple on pancakes.

Many people now see the day as an opportunity to spend quality time with family.

These people told Clare FM what their topping of choice will be when they sit down to tuck in and shared some of their favourite memories from pancake Tuesdays of yesteryear.
