Clare is on course to back Catherine Connolly in a landslide for the Presidential Election.
With all 180 boxes now open at the Shannon Count Centre and the official count underway, the Independent has carved out a sizeable lead according to tallies, but spoiled votes are also making an impression.
So far 68% of boxes have been tallied, and focusing on valid votes only , Catherine Connolly has over 13,648 , Heather Humphreys has 5,988, Jim Gavin is on 11.7% , with 2,605.
There are at least 2,150 spoiled votes so far, but this is expected to rise much higher on the official count as many tally counters (Not official count staff) are focusing on
Not all tally counters at Treacy’s Oakwood are focusing on valid votes only as spoiled votes will later be discarded once the official count begins.
So far Gerry Hutch, Bob Geldoff, Donald Trump, Enoch Burke, Bosco, Dustin the Turkey, Maria Steen and photos of Charlie Haughey and Willie O’Dea have all featured on Clare’s spoiled ballots.
In one box, in Dublin North West, spoiled votes even surpassed the total for Catherine Connolly.
However, Catherine Connolly’s lead appears to be unassailable both locally and nationally and as things stand, she will be Uachtaráin Na hEireann elect on the first count.
