The Clare Older People’s Council insists the pension rate must be brought in line with the cost of living.
It follows calls from the Pension Promise Campaign for the government to honour its commitment to benchmark the State pension at 34% of the average earnings.
The group, which includes representatives from SIPTU and Age Action Ireland, says the current higher rate of €265 is not enough for older people to live on and the group has proposed an increase of €50 over the next three years.
Chair of the Clare Older People’s Council, Maurice Harvey says the pension should be raised each year to be proportional to inflation.
