Clare Nursing Home Failed To Provide Adequate Care Plans For Residents At Risk Of Falling

An inspection has found that a south-east Clare nursing home has failed to provide adequate care plans for two residents assessed as being at risk of falling.

The Health Information and Quality has published an inspection report detailing its visit to Ennis Road Care Facility where it claims sufficient action hasn’t been taken “to bring the centre into full compliance with the regulations”.

HIQA carried out an unannounced inspection at Ennis Road Care Facility in Meelick on March 4th of this year.

The facility, which is operated by Beech Lodge Care Facility Limited, is registered to accommodate a maximum of 84 residents and had 80 present on the day of the inspection.

Inspectors heard that staff were “exceptionally good”, with one resident claiming they were “happier here than at home”, while it was noted that call bell response times “could be better”.

Notwithstanding noted improvements since the last inspection, HIQA found that “actions taken were not sufficient to bring the centre into full compliance with the regulations”.

A prominent area of concern was the development of residents’ care plans as inspectors found that plans weren’t drawn up within 48 hours of the resident’s admission to the centre, as was required.

It was observed that two residents assessed on admission as being at risk of calling, who had sustained falls at the centre, didn’t have appropriate care plans developed.

Similarly, the care plans of residents with skin integrity issues weren’t updated in a timely manner, while the plan of a resident who returned from hospital with weight loss wasn’t brought up to date.

HIQA found the facility to be compliant in seven areas in which it was assessed, substantially compliant in six and not compliant in one.

Beech Lodge Care Facility Limited has submitted a comprehensive compliance plan outlining how it intends to rectify all issues observed.
