The number of vehicles that failed the National Car Test in Clare rose by 11% last year.
More than half the cars that went through the test centre in Ennis in 2024 failed the NCT with dangerous fails up by more than 20%.
The National Car Test is an examination of roadworthiness which all private cars must undertake in order to ensure compliance with basic standards.
A total of 36,631 vehicles undertook the test in the Banner County last year which was almost 5% more than in 2023.
Of these, 16,464 passed, 16,607 recorded a major fail and 3,560 failed dangerously.
This means that just shy of 55% failed their NCT in Clare in 2024 which is up from 52% in the previous year.
Of all tests conducted at the Ennis test centre last year, 10% yielded dangerous fails which is the 12th highest rate in the country.
As such, the NCT pass rate in Clare has fallen from 48% in 2023 to 45% in 2024.
Across the country, 1,732,095 vehicles went through the National Car Test last year, with almost 51% passing while 42% received a major fail and over 7% failed dangerously.
