Clare NAGP Members Sign Up To Free Under-6s Scheme

Two Clare GPs who were among the strongest opponents to the introduction of free GP care for children under 6 have now signed up to the scheme.

The National Association of GPs had strongly opposed the scheme, and had supported a High Court action by Shannon doctor Yvonne Williams who claimed the HSE's plans would threaten her practice.

The action was dropped last month as it became clear that most doctors had joined.

Now, Dr. Williams' name appears on the list of GPs providing the free services to Under-6s, along with the group's Scarriff-based President Dr. Conor McGee.

Both have spoken strongly against it in the past.

Over 163,000 children nationwide have been registered for the free GP care scheme, along with 92% of doctors.

The sign-up rate here in Clare is higher however, with a total of 51 medics returning forms to the HSE.

Previous figures suggest that this means only 2 have remained outside the scheme.
