Clare Motorists Urged To Avoid Unnecessary Travel As Orange Alert Issued For County

Clare County Council is advising road users to avoid unnecessary travel over the coming 24 hours.

It comes as a status orange snow-ice alert has come into effect for Clare and 12 other counties, with significant accumulations of snow expected in some areas, along with icy conditions.

Motorists are being warned of very hazardous road conditions, travel disruption and poor visibility.

The N68 Ennis to Kilrush has been significantly impacted today, with two busses and a truck leaving the road earlier this morning, while back roads in West and North Clare are also said to be particularly bad.

The orange weather alert remains in place until midnight tonight, with a yellow snow ice warning in place until noon tomorrow.

Senior Engineer with Clare County Council, John Leahy has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that Winter Maintenance Teams will continue to treat roads throughout the day, as part of the Winter Maintenance Plan.

Meanwhile, more than 6,300 homes and businesses in Clare were left without power this morning on account of the weather.

It follows faults in the Ennistymon, Miltown Malbay, Kilrush, Kilkee and Drumquin areas shortly after 8 o’clock.

ESB crews have been working to resolve the issues over the past number of hours.

Area Manager Alan Hogan has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that power expected to be restored to the remaining premises later this afternoon.
