A Clare mother of two children with severe food allergies is calling for the conditions to be recognised as serious public health issues.
Since 2023, Sheila Downes and her family have been regularly travelling to France for 11-year-old Josh, and 7-year-old Erin to undergo Oral Immuno Therapy, which helps those affected to build up a tolerance.
The treatment is only available publicly in Ireland for children under five as part of a pilot programme at Cork University Hospital.
Sheila addressed the Oireachtas Health Committee yesterday on behalf of Allergy Action Ireland and has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus it’s a life saving method that needs to be expanded.
