Clare Mother Calls For Easier Access To Gastric Surgery Following Horror Experience Abroad

A south-east Clare mother is pleading with the Government to make gastric surgery more accessible following a horrific experience she endured abroad.

Leanne O’Driscoll from Meelick ended up with sepsis and septic shock after travelling to Turkey in 2022 to avail of gastric sleeve surgery which is commonly done to facilitate weight loss.

The procedure costed €2,400 compared to €14,000 in Ireland where there are currently 385 people awaiting gastrointestinal surgery.

Leanne claims many people seeking the surgery are “crippled” by financial pressure as well as mental health issues stemming from body image.
