Clare’s MEP has warned that spending on weapons won’t sustain rural communities.
It follows the announcement by the European Commission of a 20 per cent drop in resources for the agriculture sector, as part of the 2 trillion euro budget for 2028 to 2034.
Farming groups in particular have said the merging of ringfenced funds such as the Common Agricultural Policy into one larger ‘super-fund’ could see less money going to farmers, and higher food prices.
Speaking at a demonstration outside European Parliament in Brussels, Scariff-based MEP Michael McNamara says it’s vital food security is maintained.
Spending on weapons won’t sustain the lives of rural communities – spending through the Common Agricultural Policy and cohesion funding will. Security is important in the EU, but so is food security.
