A Clare-based MEP fears local distillers could be “doubly hit” by tariffs if the US President follows through on his threats.
Having already imposed levies on steel and aluminium imports from the EU, President Trump is now floating the idea of a 200% tariff on all wine, cognac and other alcohol coming from Europe.
With such a move expected to have devastating effects on companies across the bloc, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has told the US it’s open to negotiations.
Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Scariff-based Independent Member of the European Parliament Michael McNamara says distillers which import US grain would bear the brunt of this measure.
