Clare Mayor Says Bestowing Awards On Seven Recipients ‘A Huge Honour’

Clare’s Mayor says being able to bestow the county’s highest accolade on seven separate recipients this year is a ‘huge honour’.

Seven recipients were bestowed with mayoral awards last evening.

The ceremony took place at Áras Contae an Chláir last evening, and was the first such event to take place in person since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clarecastle native Roisin Cahill was recognised after she won a European Ocean Kayak gold medal in France last year, following her silver in the world championships previously.

Also honoured were the Scariff-Ogonnelloe camogie side after their second Munster title win in three years, following Mairead Scanlan’s late goal to beat Tipperary’s Drom & Inch.

She says it was very significant for the two sporting awards to be given to female sportspeople.

Lifesaver Patrick Mungovan was recognised following his rescue in Quilty last year.

Patsy Neville, who’s Chair of the 12 O Clock Hills Committee, was also honoured by the mayor’s office for helping to bring the attraction back into use over the last decade.

He says the work is never done at the venue which is located just outside Kilkishen.

The Ennis Tidy Towns Committee were recognised for their national award winning performance to add to their 2005 crown, while the Samaritans were nominated on what’s the 40th anniversary of their presence in Clare.

Seán Óg Healy, who’s a leukaemia survivor from Cratloe and an honorary member of An Garda Siochana, was the final recipient to be honoured last night.

His mum Catherine says it was a recognition for all families undertaking similar journeys.
