Lifeguards here retrieved 16 people from the water, the highest total in July for any county in Ireland.

A further 16 people were also rescued from crafts, according to figures published by Irish Water Safety.

Their statistics also show there were 16 lost children on our beaches, that first aid was administered over 200 times, and that over 1,100 accidents were prevented by what are described as lifeguards' "proactive actions."

Irish Water Safety is urging people to use manned lifeguard bathing places so as to avoid swimming tragedies in the remainder of the summer holidays.

Here in Clare there are 12 manned beaches at:

Spanish Point
Lahinch
Fanore
Bishops Quarter, Ballyvaughan
Doolin
Whitestrand, Milltown Malby
Seafield Quilty
Whitestrand Doonbeg
Kilkee
Cappagh Pier, Kilrush
Mountshannon
Ballycuggeran, Killaloe
