Clare ISME Rep Says Raising Minimum Wage May Lead To Decreased Hours and Layoffs

A Clare member of ISME’s National Council is warning that increasing the minimum wage may have the opposite effect than intended.

The Cabinet yesterday approved an 80 cent rise in the national minimum wage, bringing the rate to 11 euro 30 from January.

It’s part of a move towards a living wage by 2026 which will be set at 60 per cent of the median income in Ireland.

 

Owner of St. Tola’s Goat Cheese Farm in Ennistymon, Siobhan Ni Ghairbith says the pressure of upping wages could lead employers to cut staff hours or layoff employees.
