An Ennis haulier says the problem of human trafficking through Irish ports is “widespread”.
The Irish Road Hauliers Association has claimed that Irish truck drivers are being offered between €5,000 and €25,000 to smuggle illegal immigrants into the country.
It comes just weeks after 12 adults and two children were discovered on a lorry at Rosslare Port in a suspected human trafficking attempt.
Clare-based former IRHA President Eugene Drennan has been telling Clare FM’s Seán Lyons that while many people being illegally trafficked are simply trying to find a better life, stronger checks are needed to ensure no unwanted criminal element is entering the country.
