Clare Infectious Disease Expert Warns It’s A Matter Of Time Before Delta Variant Becomes Dominant

A Clare infectious disease expert has warned it’s only a matter of time before the Delta strain of Covid-19 becomes dominant in this country.

New restrictions on arrivals from Britain are set to be introduced in the coming days, with unvaccinated people flying into Ireland required to self-isolate for ten days.

Public Health expert Dr Gabriel Scally has said some variants are becoming more infectious and are slowly but steadily increasing their ability to dodge vaccines.

Head of the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nottingham, Professor James McInerney says the delta variant, which first originated in India, is more likely to lead to hospitalisation in those who are unvaccinated.

He insists it’s vital that every effort is made to stop the delta variant in its tracks.
