A Clare Independent TD is questioning the development of a new surgical hub in the Mid-West while two theatres in Ennis hospital have been unused since Christmas.

The UL Hospitals Group says elective surgery remains cancelled at Ennis and Nenagh hospitals as day beds are being used to manage the high numbers of inpatients across the region.

It comes as University Hospital Limerick recorded the worst levels of overcrowding in the country in the first month of the year, with 1,080 of the more than 11,000 patients nationwide waiting on a trolley at the Dooradoyle facility.

Speaking in the Dáil, Scariff Deputy Michael McNamara is querying whether a new surgical hub is the ‘solution’ to the capacity problems in the MidWest.
