Clare Independent TD Claims Government Inaction Is Hurting Disabled Community

A Clare Independent TD is criticising the Government’s delay in implementing legislation which would allow disabled persons to complain about human rights violations.

The United Nations Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which exists to promote, protect and ensure full and equal fundamental freedoms for disabled persons was ratified in Dáíl Eireann in 2018.

However Ireland remains one of ten European countries yet to implement the optional protocol of the convention which would allow disabled persons to complain to the UN if they feel their needs are not being adequately met.
