A Clare Independent TD is calling for the energy allowance element of the household benefits package to be increased in line with inflation.
The supports initiative currently enables elderly and vulnerable citizens to avail of a €35 monthly electricity or gas credit to mitigate domestic bills.
However, in 2013 the structure of the benefits package changed from covering a guaranteed 1,800 units of gas or electricity usage per annum to offering a set cash payment instead.
Kilrush-based deputy Violet-Anne Wynne has told the Dáil that she believes the current state of the scheme diminishes the purchasing power of those in energy poverty.
