The Clare-based Chair of the Independent Farmers of Ireland believes farmers will be very reluctant to volunteer their lands for rewetting.
Under the EU Nature Restoration Law which is to be voted on in the European Parliament next week, farmers could opt to submit their lands for rewetting with the aim of restoring biodiversity and reducing emissions.
However, the law has come under heavy criticism from farming representatives who believe farmers will not be in favour of changing their revenue stream from traditional practices to a custodial role.
IFOI Chair and Kilmurry McMahon native Seamus Shannon says Irish farmers have a strong cultural connection to the land.
