The Clare chair of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association says it’s “very hard to see” how new farm apprenticeships will result in more people pursuing a career in farming.
It comes as three new apprenticeships have been announced through a number of agricultural colleges are the country with courses due to begin in September.
A Farm Management apprenticeship with be available in Kilkenny and will lead to a Level 7 degree, while a Farm Technician apprenticeship will be available in Cork and Cavan and will result in a Level 6 degree.
Meanwhile, a Horticulture apprenticeship can be enrolled in at the College of Amenity Horticulture in the Botanic Gardens in Dublin.
O’Callaghan’s Mills farmer Martin McMahon says numbers are dwindling in agricultural industries as other careers are more financially viable.
