Clare Homeless Figures Down Marginally In April

The number of people recorded as living homeless in Clare has fallen marginally in the last month.

The latest figures from the Department of Housing however show the amount of people in emergency accommodation in the MidWest remains 16% higher than this time last year.

There are now 805 people living in homeless shelters and emergency accommodation across Clare and Limerick.

Of these, 225 are children and 583 are adults, with 496 of those adults based in Limerick and 87 in Clare.

Although the number of homeless adults in Clare is down slightly from the 90 on record at the end of March, the figure is still 10% above this time last year.

More than three-quarters of those in emergency accommodation in the MidWest have Irish citizenship, while 13% are from outside the EU and UK and the remaining 10% are from within the UK or the EU.

The majority of adults in emergency accommodation here are in the 25-44 age bracket, accounting for 53% of all occupants, while 61% of the 143 families in homeless shelters in the MidWest are single parent households.

Nationally, a new record was set for homelessness in April of 15,580 people.
