Clare hauliers have taken part in a blockade of Foynes Port in Limerick, over what they claim is ‘illegal’ activity relating to foreign operators.
The Irish Road Haulage Association undertook last night’s protest because it says foreign drivers have been hired to transport parts for wind farms across Munster, work which they say is unlicensed.
They say Irish hauliers feel discriminated against, but agreed to end the demonstration after Gardai gave assurances that foreign trucks transporting parts for wind farms would not be able to proceed any further.
Bunratty haulier Eoin Gavin, President of The Irish Road Haulage Association, said last night that they were trying to protect local jobs.
