Transport Minister Shane Ross has reportedly requested that the excise be brought in line with petrol over the next five years.
The change would be for climate policy reasons, and would generate 328 million for the state during a five-year transition.
Members of the Road Hauliers Association have held an emergency meeting on the issue, including their Bunratty-based past President Eoin Gavin.
