The Clare-based President of the Irish Road Haulage Association has expressed doubt that a cut to the excise duty on petrol and diesel will come to fruition.
It comes as the price of oil has spiked to its highest level since 2008, due to the ongoing crisis in Eastern Europe, with prices at the petrol pumps also going up over the weekend.
Eugene Drennan has been in consultation with the Finance Minister in the past week and is due to meet with Paschal Donoghue again in the coming days to find a solution to ease the burden of the rising cost of fuel.
The Ennis haulier is hopeful that the Government will move to introduce measures to relieve pressure on drivers and insists that without an urgent solution, drivers won’t be able to withstand the costs.
