Clare has the second-lowest NCT pass rate in Ireland.
New figures show over 12,000 motorists have already failed national car tests in this county so far this year.
Since January, approximately 21,437 National Car Tests have been conducted at Clare’s only testing centre in Ennis.
Of these, 10,173 vehicles recorded a major fail (47.5%) and 2,032 received a dangerous fail (9.5%), giving this county an overall failure rate of 57%.
In the case of a major fail, the driver has 30 days to pass a re-test, while a dangerous fail means the car cannot go back on the road until its outstanding safety issues are rectified.
A dangerous result most commonly involves issues that impair braking, steering, tires and lighting.
There are currently 315 motorists in Clare with penalty points on their licences for the offence of driving without a valid NCT.
Clare also had the 5th lowest pass rate for re-tests in the country at 89.6%, where figures show 1,228 motorists recorded a major fail more than once and 73 dangerously failed their test on more than occasion.
Cavan currently has the lowest pass rate in the country at 42.9%, while only Navan had a higher dangerous fail rate than Ennis at 10.15%.
