Clare Green Senator Claims People Can Continue To Burn Turf Following Ireland’s European Court Of Justice Referral

Clare’s Green Party senator is reassuring the county’s turf-cutting community that no one’s telling them they can’t cut or burn turf again.

It follows Ireland’s referral by the European Commission to the European Court of Justice for alleged failure to protect bog habitats.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage claims turf cutting on raised bogs was down 40% last year, while activity on 80% of raised bog in special areas of conservation has stopped completely.
