Clare GRA Rep Renews Call For Minimum Sentence For Assaulting Gardaí

Clare’s GRA representative has renewed his call for a minimum sentence to be established for the offence of assaulting a Garda.

It follows Justice Minister Helen McEntee’s announcement that the maximum sentence for assaulting or threatening to assault a Garda has increased from seven to 12 years.

Figures released to Fine Gael TD Alan Farrell earlier this year revealed that between 2015 and December 2022, 2,080 Gardaí were assaulted while on active duty.

Clare Garda Paul Crowley says while Minister McEntee’s announcement will undoubtedly serve to deter some future incidents, the creation of a minimum sentence would be a sterner measure.
