Clare GP Warns Staffing Crisis Most Acute In Rural Areas

A North Clare doctor is warning that the current GP contract is compounding issues in attracting staff to rural or deprived areas.

It comes amid calls for urgent action to address the shortage of general practitioners in the country, which doctors say is leading to significant challenges in delivering timely and high-quality patient care.

A new report has recommended the development of a national funding model to support undergraduate general practice placements for medical students in all medical schools and the establishment of GP hubs.

IMO GP Committee Member, Lahinch-based Dr. Michael Kelleher says these recommendations will make a difference, but he insists that the GP contract must be modernised in order to attract doctors to smaller practices.
