A West Clare GP insists that all sides are doing everything possible to reduce waiting lists for outpatient appointments in the Mid-West.

It comes as figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund show that at the end of February last year 15 patients were waiting 18 months for outpatient appointments in the Mid-West.

But at the end of last month, that number jumped dramatically to 3,615.

Miltown Malbay GP Dr Billy O’Connell, who is a member of the newly established local integrated primary care committee says failure to deal with overcrowding in EDs is part of the problem.

He insists that primary care remains the solution to the problem.
