Communities along the lower Shannon remain on high alert with the river set to peak over the coming days.

Up to fifty millimetres of rainfall has been forcast for the next five days, with more rain expected tomorrow than any other day this week.

50 homes were evacuated over the weekend including a number in Clare and local authorities are now compiling data on the cost of the clean-up after the floods, which is likely to run into millions of euro.

A Clonlara resident is calling for a section of the lower Shannon to be dredged to prevent further flooding in the future.

Geraldine Quinlivan of Springfield says her whole family has been affected by the flooding.

The ESB has confirmed it won't increase the amount of water flowing through the Parteen Weir today.

But it says the level of water in Lough Derg increased marginally in the past 24 hours and is warning that flooding is still likely in communities along the River Shannon.

Clonlara Councillor Michael Begley, says there's a slight air of optimism in the area today but he insists the community is not out of the woods yet, by any means.

Clare Government TD Pat Breen visited Springfield yesterday to witness first hand the effect of flooding there.

He says a plan needs to be put in place to ensure that there isn't a repeat of the current situation year on year.
