A Clare government TD insists that competition rules would not act as a barrier to establishing a public service obligation route between Shannon and Amsterdam.
It comes as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney refused to lend his support to a live application for a PSO route from Shannon Airport to Schiphol (Ski-pawl), saying it would be difficult to have a subsidised route under such rules.
However, Meelick Fianna Fáil TD, Cathal Crowe, is adamant the government will need to fund European connectivity from the regional airport.
Deputy Crowe is travelling to Amsterdam this week to make the case to establish the route, and says it’s the Dutch decision to reduce landing slots at the airport which is the real obstacle.
